Rappahannock River

Taking your boat out on the Rappahannock River is more than just a fun day on the water: it’s spending time on an important body of water for American history. It was once home to indigenous tribes and later settled as part of the Virginia Colony. It also acted as a sort of boundary between the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War, and the point in which many slaves escaped north to freedom.

Since then, it has become a favorite waterway for boaters in the region, especially fishers who can catch both freshwater and saltwater fish at various points along the river. You’ll have access to 195 miles of river, so make sure you plan accordingly and come back again to enjoy this river.

Tangier Island

One of the state’s absolute treasures, Tangier Island is home to a vibrant crabbing community and unique culture that you’ll want to explore for yourself. Keep in mind, it’s about 12 miles off the shore of the mainland, so you’ll need to plan accordingly and be confident in your navigating abilities. It’s a peaceful place to visit with museums and cultural centers, with delicious food and a quaint community that makes visiting feel like home.
